In response to 10th November article by Martha Gill: In the moral panic over vaping, we risk forgetting that cigarettes kill
The issue with the parallel between coffee and vapes is that humankind has been consuming coffee beans for all of recorded history. There are mountains of studies on caffeine's long-term physiological effects - we are clear on the benefits and risks.
Vapes, on the other hand, are a brand new innovation. The Elf Bar, for instance, was established in 2018. There is simply not enough data to provide a thorough understanding of the long-term health impacts. When it comes to cigarettes, we know how fast they kill - and regulate accordingly. Until there is the same breadth of data on vapes, they must be tightly controlled.
It is less about risk. More our understanding of risk.
