In response to 19th October article by Harriet Sherwood: Carey asks faith leaders to back 'compassionate and principled' assisted dying bill
Christian institutions throughout history have sponsored the taking and degradation of human life; whether it be the eight Crusades, the Inquisition, the institutionalisation of torture during the counter-Reformation, its profit from the African slave trade, or the murder and forced conversion of Serbian orthodox Christians in the Balkans during WWII.
Yet, when it comes to easing the suffering of the terminally ill through euthanasia, some of Christianity's 'higher-ups' must be convinced not to draw the line. Has the Church hierarchy not yet surrendered its privilege to be consulted on matters of morality?
In this functionally secular nation of ours, why does a lord or health practitioner of faith have sway in what a patient does with her own life?
