Malik asks why, if the push to end mass immigration really is about protecting working class jobs, Conservatives don’t support trade union rights and the welfare state?Â
There is no cognitive dissonance in the Tory mind, since it is ostensibly concerned with protecting bourgeoise work - which needn’t lean on trade unions and welfare - as well as those nationalist ideas of sovereignty and tradition. These are the roots of the right’s anti-immigration sentiment.Â
That portions of the British proletariat see their jobs as endangered by immigration, rather than Tory neglect, is an incidental bonus on polling day.Â
